Myths and facts about cold pressed oils:

As a health concerned individual or even as a food enthusiast, we always keep learning about new products and try to figure out if they are actually worthwhile. This leads us to a lot discussions of their uses, properties as well as myths that can sometimes be disguised as facts. We have listed a few of those myths and tried to explain the true fact behind them.

  • Myth 1: Cold-pressed oil lose their nutrition during manufacturing process.

Truth: Oil provided by Greenhabits is extracted by cold-press process and is left aside to settle the seed particles. This does not include the use of any chemical and thus does not affect the oil or its properties in any ways.

  • Myth 2: Keeping cold-pressed oil under sunlight will increase the process of sedimentation in it.

Truth: Cold-pressed oil is filtered and does not have any solid particles that would settle in any amount of time. Keeping the oil in sunlight or exposing it to heat can cause rancidity, thus it is advised to store the oil in cool, dry and dark places.

  • Myth 3: Cold pressed can only be used in salads, not for cooking.

Truth: Many cold-pressed oils have high smoking point and thus can easily be used for cooking, deep frying, etc. They also don’t interfere with the food’s taste and help in maintaining the wonderful flavours in it.

  • Myth 4: Coconut oil is high in cholesterol

Truth: Coconut cold-pressed oil contained medium chain triglycerides which helps us in increasing the good cholesterol levels in our body.

  • Myth 5: Cold-pressed oil is not useful for deep frying or Indian cooking.

Truth: Oils of sunflower, safflower, etc. have high saturation points and smoking points over 200 ℃. They can easily be used for deep frying and Indian cooking processes. It is advised to expose them to low heat to ensure their longer shelf life and healthy even for repetitive uses.

  • Myth 6: Cold-pressed oils have strong flavours and spoil the food’s authentic taste.

Truth: Many cold-pressed oils have neutral taste and do not interfere with food’s taste. It is highly nutritious and helps in enhancing the flavours in our dishes.

  • Myth 7: Cold-pressed oils are unhygienic because they are not treated.

Truth: Oils do not need to be treated/refined for hygiene purpose. They are extremely nutritious and pure in itself when extracted from the seeds.
